A 25-year-old U.S.-Africa trade pact has lapsed for the first time.
Since its enactment in 2000, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has served as the cornerstone of U.S. economic policy and commercial engagement with Africa.
More than 30 countries across Africa exported approximately 7,000 products to the U.S., ranging from textiles to agricultural goods. In 2023, African exports under AGOA totaled nearly $10 billion. With uncertainty surrounding AGOA’s renewal, hundreds of thousands of African jobs hang in the balance.
